Woman Tips:

What should I wear for my headshot session?

  • Solid Color Tops ONLY – Extensive patterns and decoration will grab attention away from your face. For professional headshots, the person viewing the headshot needs to be drawn into the face and not get distracted by outfit choices.

  • Well-Fitted & Tailored Clothes – Clothes that fit loosely will often make you look larger. Properly tailored tops will look flattering and professional. Avoid any tops that sit too slouchy.

  • Avoid Low Cut Tops – When photographing headshots, we photograph halfway into the chest area. If you decide to wear a low-cut top, it could take the attention away from the most important part of the headshot: your face.

  • Long Sleeves are Flattering Short sleeves like to misbehave and can sit funky on the arms unless properly steamed or ironed. Short sleeve shows skin at the edge of a headshot, which may distract from your face.

  • Put Proper Undergarments with your Outfit Bra straps showing in your headshot is very unprofessional. Make sure the straps are properly tucked away and hidden.

  • Avoid Transparent Tops – When looking through your clothes, make sure to try the tops on. That shouldn't be your top selection if you can see your undergarments through the shirt. If you decide to stick with a see-through top, make sure to bring a blazer or your favorite top for layering.

  • Vibrant Colors Stand Out – Depending on your profession, wearing vibrant colors will make your headshot stand out.

  • Darker Tops Can be Timeless – If you decide to stick with darker colors, besides black, navy is very flattering in photos.

  • Avoid Tops that Blend with Hair Color – Darker clothes blend too much with dark hair. If you have pale skin, avoid tops that blend with your skin unless you plan to layer. Otherwise, it looks too washed out.

  • Jewelry is Distracting Jewelry draws the attention away from the face. We do not recommend to wear any type of jewelry for your headshot. Keep it clean, simple, and timeless.

  • Makeup and Hair: DO NOT get your hair and makeup done! This is a headshot shoot. You need to look like you normally do when a client meets you.  No lotions on your face it will look shiny.

Men Tips:

What to Wear for Professional Headshots?

  • We’ll review each outfit together and decide which works best for you.

  • No matter what you choose, the most important thing is that your clothes fit well. There's not much we can do if your clothing doesn’t fit properly.

  • Solid Colors – Whether it's a shirt, polo, or jacket, stick to solid colors. Avoid stripes or small patterns, as they can cause a visual effect called Moiré. While it’s not necessary to understand this phenomenon fully, it’s essential to avoid it by choosing solid-colored clothing for your session.

  • Well-Fitted Shirts – If you don't regularly wear casual or formal shirts, try them on 2-3 days before your session. Bodies change over time, and it's crucial that your shirt fits well, especially around the neck. Consider visiting a store like Nordstrom to have your measurements checked and to find the perfect shirt size.

  • Avoid Undershirts – While undershirts are great for everyday use, we advise against them for headshots. They can often be visible under or through your shirt, creating unwanted lines on your chest and shoulders. For headshots, it’s best to skip the undershirt.

  • Haircut Timing – Avoid getting a haircut the day before your session. We recommend scheduling your haircut about a week in advance. This allows your hair to grow in slightly and look more natural without sharp cut lines

  • Shaved Hair – If you shave daily, continue your routine on the day of your session. If you shave every few days or weeks, allow 1-2 days for regrowth before the session.

  •  Hair Washing – If you wash your hair daily, continue as usual. We recommend not going more than 1-2 days without washing your hair before your session.

  • Facial Hair

  • If you shave every day, feel free to skip this section. For those who grow a beard or shave less frequently, here are our top facial hair tips:

  • Bring Shaving Supplies – If you shave every few days or weeks and want to capture both looks, bring your shaving kit to the session. We can take photos with your beard first and then do a clean-shaven look afterward.

  • Trim Nose and Ear Hair – Pay attention to stubborn nose and ear hair. We recommend trimming these before your session. While we can retouch minor issues, it's best to handle them in advance.

  • Razor Burn – Use shaving creams and aftershaves that suit your skin. If you experience razor burn, don't worry too much—our professional retouching can help minimize its appearance.

  •   Limit Sun Exposure – A few days before your session, try to minimize time spent in the sun. Fresh sunburn or redness won't look good in your headshots.

  • Get Enough Rest – You want to look rested, confident, and energized in your headshot. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before to ensure you look your best.

Here are some tips on how to match clothing colors to different skin tones:

Fair Skin Tone

Best Colors:

·       Soft pastels like baby blue, mint green, soft pink, and lavender.

·       Jewel tones like emerald green, ruby red, and sapphire blue.

·       Muted shades such as dusty rose, mauve, soft peach, and powder blue.

·       Light neutrals like light gray, off-white, and taupe.

  • Colors to Avoid: Bright, bold colors like neon or very dark colors can overpower fair skin. White can wash out the complexion.

Light or Pale Skin with Warm Undertones

Best Colors:

·       Earthy tones like camel, khaki, and terracotta.

·       Warm shades of red such as brick red and coral.

·       Oranges like tangerine and burnt orange.

·       Yellow tones like mustard and golden yellow.

·       Warm greens such as olive and moss.

  • Colors to Avoid: Cool colors like icy blues or grays can clash with warm undertones.

Medium Skin Tone

Best Colors:

·       Warm colors like mustard yellow, burnt orange, and cinnamon.

·       Jewel tones like sapphire blue, emerald green, and amethyst purple.

·       Bold colors like cranberry, turquoise, and magenta.

·       Warm browns like caramel, chocolate, and tan.

·       Teal, peacock blue, and coral.

  • Colors to Avoid: Beige and light pastels can blend too much with medium skin, making you look washed out.

Olive Skin Tone

Best Colors:

·       Rich, warm colors like deep red, burnt orange, and copper.

·       Deep blues like navy and indigo.

·       Greens like forest green and hunter green.

·       Rich purples such as plum and eggplant.

·       Warm neutrals like chocolate brown, charcoal, and camel.

·       Bold colors like rust, burgundy, and pomegranate.

·       Colors to Avoid: Olive green or brown can blend with your skin tone too much, making you look monotone. Neon colors might also be too harsh.

Tan Skin Tone

Best Colors:

·       Warm, vibrant colors like orange, coral, and gold.

·       Bright shades like fuchsia, turquoise, and royal blue.

·       Deeper tones like mahogany, brick red, and deep teal.

·       Warm metallics such as bronze and gold.

·       Bright whites and ivory.

·       Jewel tones like emerald and ruby.

  • Colors to Avoid: Colors that are too close to your skin tone, like beige or camel, can make your complexion look dull.

Dark Skin Tone

Best Colors:

·       Bold, bright colors like cobalt blue, emerald green, and bright yellow.

·       Warm earth tones like copper, bronze, burnt orange, and mustard.

·       Vibrant shades of magenta, electric blue, and sunset orange.

·       Metallics like gold, bronze, and copper.

·       Jewel tones like royal purple, deep burgundy, and emerald.

  • Colors to Avoid: Very dark colors like black or navy might blend too much, and pale shades may not provide enough contrast.

Deep Skin Tone

Best Colors:

·       Vibrant colors like fuchsia, royal purple, and sapphire blue.

·       Bold, bright colors like ruby red, deep orange, and sunflower yellow.

·       Metallics like gold, bronze, and copper.

·       Deep, rich tones like plum, burgundy, forest green, and deep teal.

·       Jewel tones like amethyst, emerald, and topaz.

·       Rich browns like espresso, mocha, and dark chocolate.

  • Colors to Avoid: Avoid overly bright neon colors and very light pastels as they can create too much contrast.
